How do barcodes work?

Barcodes are one of the most useful innovations to hit the business world in recent history. The idea of barcodes was conceived in the late 1940s, but they didn’t gain prominence until the early 1960s. In use by various industries since late that same decade, barcodes were created to efficiently and accurately label and identify products and devices. Having undergone many variations in their early application, barcodes have pretty much standardized into two different categories: 1D and 2D.
